QUICK FACTSBekaa Valley, Lebanon
Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Carignan
DESCRIPTIONThe Hochar family’s philosophy of respect for the environment means that the 180 hectares of Musar vineyards are managed with minimal human interference and all the wines are made naturally.
Flanked by snow-covered mountains, and nestled at 1000m (3,000 feet) above sea level, the serenely beautiful Bekaa Valley is blessed with 300 days of sunshine a year, fresh mountain breezes and an average temperature of 25°C (encompassing snowy winters and hot summers). Remote and unspoilt, the Musar vineyards were ‘organic’ by default before the term was coined.
The 1998 vintage is an extremely refined and harmonious vintage at it’s perfect drinking maturity. Concentrated layers of ripe berries and cooked plums are balanced with an alluring spice and cedar undertone.
"The 1998 Chateau Musar is a rather prototypical Musar - lots of acidity, some brett, fine structure. It reveals a more gentle style on opening, but aeration proves how much underlying power it actually has. (That is, a lot.) ... There is plenty of power, tannin and acidity, but there is also some balance. I loved the silky texture, emphasized in this vintage. It finishes with a controlled bang. This greatly benefitted from some air, showing layers that I did not initially think it had, but it does seem a bit on the lighter side. Drink now-2030". 90 points. Mark Squires, The Wine Advocate.
